Firefighters holding ceremony for return of injured colleague
Hollywood firefighter Derek Avilez, who doctors thought would be paralyzed for life, is preparing to return to work Monday.
Avilez will perform light duty at his Hollywood station after a special ceremony honring his return.
Two rows of firefighters will create a path from Avilez to his helmet. Although he will be in a wheelchair, Avilez is expected to walk the final ten feet to his helmet.
Avilez was severely injured in a skimboarding accident in September 2010.
Doctors thought he would never walk again, and said Avilez would need to remain on a respirator.
Since then, Avilez has made a miraculous recovery.
On Saturday, firefighters from Fort Lauderale and several other departments held a fundraiser in his honor.
The event took place at Markham Park and included a 5 mile, 10 mile, 20 mile, and 38 mile bike ride.
The money will help pay for Avilez's medical bills.
